“Let’s become capable of waiting courageously.”

By Monica Dauksts

This I believe – that I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!
Wait for the LORD and be strong. Take heart and wait for the LORD!

Psalm 27:13-14

hat an uplifting and encouraging faith statement! I believe! This means I am on the lookout for God’s goodness. In order to see it, I must be willing to seek it, to recognize it and to be unafraid to enjoy it. For the psalmist, the “land of the living” meant: “while I am still living here on earth.” It was also a description of the Jerusalem temple, where the faithful had access to the life-giving presence of God.

The life-giving presence of God can be found always and everywhere, in all people, in every being of creation. Do I recognize this presence? It is accessed in a unique way through the life-giving body of Christ: Word, Bread, Community – all fully alive, present here and now and yet to come in eternal life! Yes, the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living abounds!

But when life turns challenging, it’s hard to remain positive. We forget to believe. We get discouraged. Things aren’t going as planned. We want instant relief. Sometimes, we forget how good it can be to wait (for a new baby, a simmering stew, a fresh coat of paint to dry, for a storm to pass). It takes courage to use wait time wisely. Waiting allows preparation, strengthens patience and provides a prayer opportunity. What we do while we wait is an important choice. As we wait these forty days of Lent, let’s choose to be people reflecting the goodness of the Lord. Let’s get stronger each day. Let’s become capable of waiting courageously.

Good Lord, we believe, we trust, we wait in joyful and confident hope! Amen.
