Inter-Religious Dialogue

While Ecumenism technically pertains to other Christian religions, the 2cd Vatican Council and Pope John Paul II have applied the principles of shared prayer, dialogue and shared effort to people of non-Christian Religions. Few people have been as tireless in this effort as has Pope John Paul II, who has prayed in temples, visited the wailing wall in Jerusalem, kissed the Koran and prayed with the Dali Lama and other religious leaders at Assisi. The CIC tries to follow the example of the 2cd Vatican Council and the Holy Father in our programming. The following excerpt from the 2cd Vatican Council best expresses the relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions:

"Men look to various religions for answers to the profound mysteries of the human condition which, today, even as in olden times, deeply stir the human heart: What is man? What is the meaning and purpose of our life? What is goodness, what is sin? What gives rise to our sorrows? Where lies the path to true happiness? What is the truth about death, judgment and retribution beyond the grave? What, finally, is that ultimate and unutterable mystery which engulfs our being, and whence we take our rise and withier our journey leads us… In Hinduism men contemplate the divine mystery and express it through an unspent fruitfulness of myths and through searching personal inquiry, They seek release from the aguish of our condition through ascetical practices or deep meditation or a loving trusting flight toward God…..Buddhism in its multiple forms…teaches a path by which men in a confident and devout spirit can either reach a state of absolute freedom or attain supreme enlightenment by their own efforts or by higher assistance…Upon Moslems too the Church looks with esteem…..although in the course of centuries many quarrels and hostilities have arisen between Christians and Moslems, this most Sacred Synod urges all to forget the past and strive sincerely for mutual understanding…The Catholic Church rejects nothing which is true and holy in these religions. She looks with sincere respect upon those ways of conduct and of life, those rules and teachings, which, though differing in many particulars from what she holds true, nevertheless offer a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men…The Church therefore has this exhortation for her sons: prudently and lovingly, through dialogue and collaboration with the followers of other religions, and in witness of Christian faith and life, acknowledge, preserve and promote the spiritual and moral goods found among these men, as well as the values in their society and culture."
